Department of Posts launches ‘Go Green’ initiative
As a first step towards creating a green office environment, the Department of Posts has started a ‘Go Green’ initiative to plant 50,000 saplings across the State.
The postal department looks to promote afforestation on its premises and contribute to the State’s green cover in its own way. Usha Chandrasekar, Member (Operations), Postal Services Board, New Delhi planted a neem sapling at a vacant site in Koyambedu near the Metrorail station.
M. Sampath, Chief Postmaster General, Tamil Nadu circle, and other postal department officials also planted saplings at the site identified for building the new Koyambedu post office.
Officials recalled that the site spread over 9,700 sq.ft. was given as alternative by Chennai Metro Rail Limited. As the present Koyambedu post office is functioning on rented premises, it has been proposed to construct a building that would house a sub post office, business post centre and parcel packing centre.
