UNI Global Union General Secretary, Philip Jennings gave this reaction to the election of Donald Trump:
"The warning signs have been there for some time. An economy that works for the 1%, stagnant wages, fears that the children of workers will be worse off than their parents, and enduring and massive inequality have resulted in a strong political backlash. This fragility has bred insecurity and anger over economic justice, which the emboldened right have fuelled with the language of hate, division, racism and xenophobia.
We stand with our union sisters and brothers in the USA. Our work for a strong economic alternative, to rethink capitalism and to build a programme that brings people hope is critically important. Our global struggle for peace, justice and decent work continues."
The UNI Global Union World Executive Board will meet next week to look at the broader implications of this unexpected result.
