Concern over decision to decrease interest rates on postal savings

Following the government’s decision to recalibrate the interest rate of small saving schemes from April 1, depositors have raise concern over the decrease in interest for their savings.
Last month, the government had announced that it would revise interest rates of small savings schemes on a quarterly basis to align them with the market rate of other government securities. If the move is implemented, new depositors will have to settle for a slightly lesser interest rate.
The rate of interest for some of the schemes such as recurring deposit, time deposit and kisan vikas patra may decrease by 0.25 per cent. In Chennai City region, there are over 60 lakh savings deposit holders now.
Postal agents too fear that the number of people depositing money in post offices may decrease if the decision is implemented.
S. Rajpandian, president of Tamil Nadu Postal Agents Welfare Association, said the maturity period ofkisan vikas patra might have to be revised according to the interest rate that is being provided. This may discourage some depositors as the amount invested will double during the maturity period. Time deposits and monthly income schemes (MIS) are some of the popular schemes.
However, interest rates of schemes like MIS, selvamagal semippu thittam, ponmagan podhuvaippu nidhi and those for senior citizens will remain the same. The association plans to submit a memorandum to the Postal Department seeking continuation of the existing interest rate and increase in the incentives given to them.
Many post offices are yet to receive any directives about the new move with regard to savings schemes. Officials said that the interest rate, even if revised, would still remain higher than those offered by financial institutions and banks. It would not affect the deposits as people, particularly those in rural areas, would prefer to invest in post offices, they added.

JODHPUR: Devotees of Lord Shiva have now more to cheer about this Maha Shivratri. The postal department has entered into two separate agreements with two temples of Lord Shiva, the Kashi Vishwanath Temple Trust of Varanasi and Shri Mahakaleshwar Jyotirling Mandir, Ujjain, so that 'prasada' (offering) from these temples can reach the devotees' doorsteps. The devotees will have to make a payment of a determined amount in the form of the postal orders to the temple(s) in order to avail the 'holy' scheme of the postal department. Describing the initiative, director (postal services - Rajasthan western region) K K Yadav said that if the devotees want the prasada from Kashi temple, they will have to send a money order of Rs 60 to the post office of the senior superintendent of post officer at Varanasi. In case of Mahakaleshwar temple, the devoteess will have to send a postal order worth Rs 201 to the administrator of the management committee of the temple. While the devotees will get 'bhabhuti' (ash) from the temple, a rudraksha bead, laminated photo of Lord Shiva and Shiva Chalisa in the first case. In the second case, they will get prasada comprising 200 gm of dry fruits and 200 gm sweets, 'bhabhuti' (ash) and a photo of Lord Shri Mahakaleshwar through speed post. The department, like on earlier occasions such as Rakshabandhan, has also made available special envelops to ensure safe delivery of the offerings to the devotees. "We have special envelopes for this delivery, which are water-proof and tamper-proof, so that the prasad retains its purity and sacredness, since this has direct bearing on the reverence and religious feelings of the devotees", said Yadav. Jodhpur: The Postal department has entered into two separate agreements with the two highly respected temples of the Lord Shiva, the Kashi Vishwanath Temple Trust of Varanasi and Shri Mahakaleshwar Jyotirling Mandir, Ujjain, with a view to make the blessings of Lord Shiva available to the devotees at their door-step in the form of 'prasada' (sacrament) this Maha-Shivratri. The devotees willing to have the sacrament of the(se) temples at their door-step will have to make a payment of the determined amount in the form of the postal orders to the temple(s) in order to avail themselves of this 'holy' scheme of the department of post.
